By Tim Daniels
Yesterday, three of us went to King Range to ride, check out the progress on the skills park, to pick up tee shirts for our 6/5 trail crew, and unbeknownst to us, do a little trail work (we cleared a couple trees down on the trail).
Significant progress has been made toward creating the skills park. The park is being built by professionals. They first focused on a bypass trail that will be bi-directional and primarily for those riding through on the cross country trail and to return to the top of the skills park. In the skills park, there will be a beginner trail, an intermediate trail, and an expert trail, all of which will be one way traffic for obvious reasons. The bypass is almost complete and the trail builders told us it should be open for riding in a week or so. I walked it; it’s so nice. This addition is going to be the icing on the cake, and the cake’s not even out of the oven yet. I have a feeling Tolkan campground is going to seem awfully small in the coming years.
Oh yeah, the ride was a hoot too. Trail conditions are prime right now. I highly recommend getting out there as soon as you get a chance.
Arcata Community Forest Trail Days

Thanks to our volunteers, we’re making progress on the new singletrack at the Arcata Community Forest. The next trail work day is scheduled at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 17. To get to the site, go up Trail Eight past the reservoir dam and look for the “trail work” signs leading you up the service road. And don’t forget, volunteers get free membership this year with Bigfoot Bicycle Club!
If you plan to show up, please contact Bigfoot Bicycle Club trail day coordinator Rocky Brashear at rocanwave at yahoo.com.
